Single Minded Devotion

“Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name.” Psalm‬ ‭86:11‬

At all times prayer should be our first resolve; not our last resort. When King David came to a crossroads or faced challenges in his life, he sought the counsel of the Lord. When David was at his best, “he desired to remain teachable, flexible, and adaptable to God’s plans” (Ed Rea). He was a man after God’s heart. The worst moments of his life were the times when he did not seek God’s heart nor delight himself in the Lord. Instead, he gave into his own desires and relied on his own understanding.

A DIVIDED HEART

Like David at his best, we must seek God to unite our hearts to fear His name in worship and in prayer. When when don’t, our hearts become divided. A divided heart is a heart stuck between two opinions, possibilities, or options. David knew that, like a sheep, his heart was prone to wander. Therefore, he prayed for God to unite his heart and give him a single-minded devotion to his God.

When a person has a divided heart and is double minded, he/she will be unstable in all their ways (James 1:6-7). They will desire God’s blessings without walking in God’s truth; where the blessings of His favor and fellowship is found (1 John 1:6-9). David prayed, “teach me your ways, O Lord that I may walk in your truth.” What prevents us from walking in truth? The answer is a divided heart that is not fully devoted to God.

When asked by His disciples about the greatest commandment, Jesus said, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind” Matthew‬ ‭22:37‬. "We love because He first loved us" 1 John 4:19.

May the love of God demonstrated on the cross of Jesus capture and unite our hearts to fear the Lord so that we desire, seek, and walk in truth to the glory of His name.
