Where are you?
“And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” Genesis 3:8-9
While Adam and Eve were trying to hide from the presence of God because of their sin and shame, the Lord called out and asked, “Where are you?” Why would the Lord ask such a question? Didn’t He already know where they were hiding?
He did. But when the Lord asked the question, it wasn’t because He didn’t know the answer. The question was asked for the sake of others. In the case of Adam and Eve, the question was designed to make them think about how they got to where they were.
When you’re lost and you call for directions, usually the first question asked by the person giving you directions is, “Where are you?” You need to know where you are before you can get to where you need to be.
Adam and Eve were in a bad place because they chose to act independently of God which is the essence of sin. In that place, rather than enjoying God’s presence, which is what they were created for, they were hiding from Him in shame. That’s not a good place to be.
But a worse place to be is in a place you shouldn’t be and not care. Where are you? To recognize that you are in a bad place is the beginning of getting to where you need to be, namely enjoying fellowship with God and fulfilling His purpose for your life.
Jesus made a way through the shedding of His blood for us to be reconciled to the Father. If you’re not where you should be, and you don’t want to stay there, stop hiding.
Run to the Father in repentance and faith and He will receive you in His restoring grace. He will forgive you and you will be renewed and refreshed in the presence of the Lord.
Blessings,
