His Mercy is Greater
“The Lord spoke to Manasseh and to his people, but they paid no attention.” 2 Chronicles 33:10
When King Manasseh went whoring after other gods, God sent prophets to speak to him and warn him of the destructive path that he was on. However, Manasseh paid no attention. The fact that God spoke to Manasseh after he had already turned a deaf ear to God to do his own thing, was a mercy. God could have allowed him to plunged deeper into his sinful depravity and destruction. But instead God in his mercy and grace ran interference.
However, Manasseh would not listen. So God found other more compelling ways to get his attention. Manasseh was taken captive by the Babylonians. God allowed Manasseh to be carried away as a captive, after the pattern of his own sinful bondage. But while captive, Manasseh prayed and humbled himself before the Lord. And God heard his humble pleas and in his mercy God delivered him from his captivity and brought him again into his kingdom. Manasseh's sin was great, but God's mercy was greater. God's mercy was demonstrated not just in giving Manasseh a second chance, but in continuing to speak to him in his rebellion. And even though he still wouldn't listen, God found other ways to get his attention.
Even though we turn a deaf ear to God, he will not turn a blind eye to our sin. He loves us too much to let our sinful ways go unchecked. Our sins are great, but His mercy is greater. Grace is getting what we don’t deserve. Mercy is not getting what we do deserve. We have a sin debt that we cannot pay. Jesus paid a sin debt that he did not owe (Romans 6:23). He got what he didn’t deserve so that sinners could be freed from the justifiable judgment they do deserve. He gave it all so that all who believe might receive every spiritual blessing at His expense.
May the goodness and mercy of God lead us to humble ourselves and repent,
