God's Truth is the Only Truth

“Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name.” Psalm 86:11

There's a big thing these days where people say, "I must live out my truth." That's just a cover up for what they're really saying, which is, "I'm going to let my feelings and my desires and my lusts be what controls my life." When it comes to right and wrong, evil and good, there is no such thing as "my truth." There's God's truth and that’s it.

The “my truth” thing is not new. In Romans 1:18-27, in the first century, Paul wrote about the consequences of man exchanging the truth for a lie: “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen. For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.”

We don't get to ultimately decide what truth is. But because people today have suppressed the truth and exchanged it for a lie, many can’t even define what a woman or a man is. The suppression of the truth has led to, among others things, gender rebellion. In his book, The Church in Babylon, Erwin Lutzer explains:

“The modern man says, ‘If I think or feel I am a woman, then I am a woman.’ And a woman says, ‘If I think or feel I am a man, I am a man.’ With an air of defiance, many in our generation say, ‘God did not determine who I am; I determine who I am.’ Really? Transgendered people tell us that their bodies don’t match their internal reality. The trans movement believes that relief from this dysphoria can only come if the outer ‘false’ appearance is changed to match the inner ‘true’ state of the person. In Bruce Jenner’s case, he puts it this way, ‘Bruce Jenner … was always telling lies. Caitlyn Jenner … doesn’t have any lies… Caitlyn Jenner has the possibility to make it right.’

What do we say to those who say they must live according to their feelings or orientation and not according to their biological anatomy? After all, they tell us, they want to live ‘authentically.’ Shouldn’t people always be ‘true to who they feel they are’? The legendary UCLA head coach John Wooden once said: ‘Being true to ourselves doesn’t make us people of integrity. Charles Manson [now deceased] was true to himself, and as a result, he rightly is spending the rest of his life in prison. Ultimately, being true to our Creator gives us the purest form of integrity.’

This brings us to the topic of transableism. Transableism refers to thinking that you’re born with body parts that you don’t feel belong to you, and so you must rid yourself of these parts to live authentically. In Canada, a man studied how he could amputate his arm without bleeding to death because he always felt that his arm wasn’t really part of his body. He cut off his healthy arm because it wasn’t part of who he perceived himself to be. As reported in a National Post article, he told the body modification website ModBlog, ‘My goal was to get the job done with no hope of reconstruction or re-attachment, and I wanted some method that I could actually bring myself to do.’

There are people who want to be made deaf or blind because these body parts don’t really represent who they are. They, too, want to voluntarily disable themselves to be ‘authentic.’ The condition, known as Body Integrity Identity Disorder, is a ‘rare, infrequently studied and highly secretive condition in which there is a mismatch between the mental body image and the physical body,’ according to one study.

And now there are those who claim to be trans age, such as a fifty-two-year-old man who identifies as a six-year-old girl. Stefonknee (formerly Paul) Wolscht says, ‘I can’t deny I was married. I can’t deny I have children but I’ve moved forward now and I’ve gone back to being a child.’ So he left his wife and children in order to live ‘authentically’ as a six-year-old. He continues, ‘Well, I have a mommy and daddy … who are totally comfortable with me being a little girl. And their children and grandchildren are totally supportive.’ Then this description: ‘They color and do kid’s stuff. It’s called play therapy.’

Should we be okay with letting him play with his ‘peers’ in a kindergarten class? Should his family buy him dolls so that he can live 'authentically'? After all, should we not applaud him for wanting to live in accordance with who he ‘really’ is? Absurd? Of course it’s absurd, but in a culture where reason and common sense no longer carry any weight, absurdity is no longer an argument against anything. Our society tells us that we should applaud people for having the courage to ‘become who they really are.’ You can’t judge anyone as long as they are being ‘true’ to themselves.” (The Church in Babylon, Erwin W. Lutzer).

But now, the question is, do you know the truth and are you walking in it? Perhaps you may profess to know the truth, but practically, like many in our world, you are doing the "my truth" thing. My truth is the broad way that leads to destruction. God's truth is the narrow way that leads to life (Matthew 7:13-14). If you're on the narrow way and not going the way of the world, then you know that truth is more than a concept or good ideas or a philosophy. Truth is a person. Truth is Jesus (John 14:6).

Many think that to walk in the truth is to be shackled. But the opposite is true. Living the "my truth" way leads to perversion and slavery to evil desires. Knowing the truth, who is Jesus, is true freedom. He laid His life down to set you free from the power and penalty of sin; which is the my truth way. May your prayer to God be: “Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name.” (Psalm 86:11)
